Montclair resident Betty Holloway shares an intimate and intriguing portrait of a Alice Hooe Foster and her remarkable African American family in the Township of Montclair, circa 1874 to 1940, including their contributions as business leaders that laid the framework for what was to become a middle class actively engaged in uplifting the culture and life of the community. Foster, the first African American woman to graduate from Montclair High School, contributed greatly to Montclair’s social justice initiatives in the early 20th century, including the founding of a YWCA for African American women and girls. Holloway is a Montclair resident, former teacher, educational consultant, and historian. . Suggested donation $5. In the Founder’s Room, 110 Orange Road, Montclair. www.montclairhistory.org.
