Mountainside Medical Center recently installed the Artis zee biplane, an innovative imaging system that facilitates swifter, more precise diagnosis and treatment for patients presenting with stroke and cardiovascular conditions.

“This cutting-edge technology offers many advantages for patients who require angiography, a minimally invasive procedure that uses guided imagery via a catheter to examine blood vessels and detect blockages,” said Dr. Ankitkumar Patel, a board-certified Interventional Cardiologist and Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center. “In emergency cases which involve symptoms consistent with a blockage that’s impacting the brain or heart, time is of the essence. The Artis zee biplane’s extraordinary, three-dimensional images and flexibility supports quick and accurate decision-making that can save lives and minimize the long-term effects of a stroke or heart attack,” he said.

This Siemens system produces highly detailed images similar to those generated by computed tomography (CT) scanners with superior differentiation of soft tissue. Its features include two advanced flat-panel x-ray detectors that prevent distortion, the ability to capture images from any angle and proprietary software applications that support neuroradiology, cardiology, abdominal and oncological interventional procedures. Patient benefits associated with the Artis zee biplane include greater comfort, shorter procedure times and reduced radiation exposure.

“We’re excited to have an Artis zee biplane to support our work. This advanced technology takes the hospital’s capabilities to the next level,” observed Dr. Raymond Holmes, Division Chief of Vascular Surgery at Mountainside Medical Center.

According to Dr. Robert Heary, Division Chief of Neurosurgery, “The volume of neurosurgery procedures performed here has been steadily increasing in recent years and the Artis zee biplane represents an opportunity to further expand our program to include additional, complex live-saving procedures.”
