Don't pass the salad - if it's Romaine Lettuce. Consumer Reports warns consumers that Romaine Lettuce should be avoided for now due to an outbreak of a very dangerous strain of E. coli bacteria.

About 58 people have become sickened with E. coli, a potentially deadly illness, from what appears to be Romaine Lettuce. As of now, 1 person had died and 5 others have been hospitalized with E. coli believed to be from Romaine Lettuce, in the U.S.

Consumer Reports, in its report, asked the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control to step up and warn Americans immediately to this danger.

Although Romaine Lettuce is not 100% confirmed as the culprit for this new E. coli outbreak, Consumer Reports recommends avoiding this crispy lettuce for now. Total E. coli outbreaks in the U.S. are at 17 since the end of November.
