Church Street may seem a little more like Soho than Montclair nowadays, as Fresco has rolled out their high-end outdoor seating, sound system and authentic Italian and modern take on Mediterranean cuisine.
But it's not just the atmosphere, with live free music on Saturdays and a rejuvenated downtown that will put a smile on your face.
It's the food.
Fresco is owned by two brothers, who know a thing or two about authentic Italian food. And, since they also hail originally from West Paterson, they also serve up some fine Italian specialities.
I really love their salmon, which is grilled to perfection and served over a fresh corn salad, which is a sweet fresh compliment to the gorgeous cut of seafood. The taste is bright and light, and filled with a farm-like wholesomeness at the same time. I highly recommend this dish.
But don't rule out the pizza, which is made just like it is in Naples, in a wood burning oven. While the kids can enjoy a typical pie, you can feast on something more exotic, like a Bianca Tartufo fresh mozzarella, created with ricotta, scamorza, black truffle oil ; or the Diavola, covered with fresh plum tomato, fresh mozzarella, spicy sopressata, red hot pepper flakes, and basil. My favorite? It's the Fresco smoked mozzarella, arugula, prosciutto di parma, with shaved parmigiano pie - and it is just heavenly.
The next time you want brunch, lunch or dinner, check out this hot spot on Church Street. And, if it's your birthday, tell your waiter. You will get a big surprise (shhh - it's a secret!).
See you there.
